Follow us on:

This certainly seemed to prove an easier and more painless way to attain our accreditation.

Kings Security (Full Application)

The new process was clear, very quick and easy to use.I would not hesitate to use this service when our accreditation comes up for renewal next year.

A high percentage of new business is generated through successful tenders. Over the years the number of lead contractors that make CHAS registration a prerequisite in the tendering stage has risen substantially. One of our biggest customers accepts CHAS as an alternative to having to go through their own health and safety questionnaires. This allows us to streamline our tendering process to maximise the number of projects we can work on.

Greens Decorating Contractors Ltd.

With my company being small, the assessment works well for me, but also keeps me up to date with all my H&S. Without using CHAS some of these things could get forgotten about, so would cost my company in contracts in the future.

T Brown Joiners.

Joining CHAS really made us consider out H&S procedures in more detail and having to document them all instantly makes them easier to maintain and renew.

Ecological Land Management Ltd.

CHAS is a great service which has helped my company become better and which has resulted in us winning more contracts of work. I have also recommended CHAS to other companies I work alongside who have now also become CHAS accredited.

MA Brickworks Ltd.

The accreditation process itself is a great way of monitoring the H&S within your own company, so by itself forces training in areas you may not be familiar with, so money well spent.

Probe Lockers.

I would just like to thank you for your help and expertise throughout this whole process. My experience with CHAS was great from start to finish.

Autism Hampshire.

We first achieved our CHAS accreditation in 1998 and have found it very useful as a means of demonstrating that we comply with current health & safety law in the construction industry. CHAS is recognised across the whole of our industry so it reduces the amount of time and resources needed to pre-qualify for projects.

Full SSIP Member

CHAS is a founder member Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) which promotes mutal recognition - "deemed to satisfy" - between member schemes. Read more about CHAS and SSIP

A supplier's CHAS status is available in real time from the SSIP Portal. However for the full audit trail and details of work categories assessed you will need to access the CHAS database. This also applies to other member schemes - you should check with them if the assessment details are available on their systems.

Full audit trail and assessment history

We don't simply show a pass/fail status: CHAS buyers can view the completed applications forms, any correspondence with the assessor as well as the work categories assessed. This gives buyers the assurance that an assessment has been carried out to the required standard. A full assessment history is available.

Configurable compliance period

Although CHAS has moved to an annual assessment cycle we recognise that buyers may have different requirements. CHAS buyers can have the system configured so that suppliers will still be shown as compliant for whatever time period they choose

Please note: the benefits of Accreditation (Use of logo etc) are only available to the supplier for one year after assessment

Multiple bespoke contractor lists

CHAS buyers can use CHAS to manage one or more of their supplier lists. E.g lists can be broken down by regions or trades

EMail alerts

CHAS buyers receive email alerts when any details - such as new status, comments or insurance details - are entered on any of the suppliers on their list(s)

Free buyer access

Access to CHAS is free to buyers that have a supply chain and use CHAS to assist them with their pre-qualification process.

Experienced, qualified and well trained assessors

CHAS Assessors have practical industry experience, health and safety qualifications and regular training. Read more about the CHAS Assessors

Capacity to cope with surges in work load

Have a large approved list that you need to be assessed asap?

Not a problem! We have 130 assessors who are able to process thousands of assessments a month without any sacrifice in quality.

Robust Quality Control

Our assessors are subject to monthly quality control the results of which are added to the database

CHAS is also audited annually by the UKAS accredited certification body BM TRADA Certification to both the ISO9001 and ISO14001 standards

CHAS is audited annually by an independent SSIP auditor

Facility to make private and public comments

Buyers can enter comments that are viewable to all other CHAS buyers and assessors. Alternatively private comments can be entered that are only viewable by users in the same organisation.

Flexible IT systems

The database is ours and is maintained and developed in house. It therefore can be quickly modified to meet new buyer requirements. The system is constantly being enhanced and many new features have been added in response to suggestions from buyers.

Largest database of its kind in the UK

CHAS has over 48,000 suppliers (as of September 2012) on its database - more than twice the number of its nearest competitors. This means that more of a buyer's approved list is likely to already be on the CHAS database.

Supply chain matching service

If you are considering CHAS and want to know how many of your existing supply chain are registered with us we will check - free of charge - your supply chain against our database to a maximum 500 suppliers

In a recent matching exercise for a mix small and large organisations we established that between 41 and 79% of their supply chain were already CHAS registered. The grand total of suppliers checked for the six buyers totalled 4826 suppliers with 2417 CHAS registered (51%).

Used and trusted by over 550 buyer organisations

CHAS is used by over 550 buyer organisations for their stage 1 health and safety assessments. These include a diverse range of organisations including one third of UK Councils, many of the top 20 building contractors and blue chip organisations. View CHAS Buyers

Nb: this is the total number or member organisations - not the total number of users. Each organisation may have multiple users

Various database access levels available

A buyer can have multiple user logins with varying levels of permissions. For example you may want some people to be able to build up your contractor list and add comments, and others to have read only access

Regular customer feedback

We hold regular supplier and buyer surveys the results of which are published on the website. We proatively re-act to comments made in the survey

Support and advice for suppliers

Because of the support and advice we give to suppliers during the assessment process our failure rate is less than 1%

Prompt assessment service

90% of our assessments are completed within 10 working days but have arrangements to facilitate an assessment within two or three if needed

Policy that Health and Safety systems should be embedded

When an assessor has a question they will deal directly with the suppliers rather than third party health and safety consultants. This is the only way you can be sure that systems are embedded within the company and the supplier is actually aware of what has been submitted on their behalf. Read about the role of consultants in the assessment process

15 years experience of running a health and safety scheme

CHAS has been in existence since 1997 and has been available online since January 2001. CHAS is the oldest and most established health & safety assessment scheme in the country

Independent, transparent complaints and appeals process
