CHAS Case Study

Norse Commercial Services

Started in 1990, Norse Commercial Services is a £180 million turnover group of companies, employing over 9,000 people across England and Wales, and enjoying the long-term financial security of a £2 billion forward order book.

The company operates 15 joint ventures with local authorities and provides contract services direct to a wide range of public and private sector clients. Through its unique and powerful combination of public sector ethos and commercial flair, it has built a reputation for cost efficiency, quality and innovation in service delivery.

In the last five years alone Norse has saved the public purse over £70million, whilst helping to protect front line services, provide job security and generate much needed income for financially stretched local authority partners.

Simon Toseland, Head of Health & Safety at Norse said:

“Using CHAS gives us the confidence that a ‘minimum standard’ of health, safety and environmental management is being achieved by all of our contractors. We work with a broad range of contractors from small teams of local trades to the larger, more well-known, names. We realise that some organisations are still getting to grips with the implementation of CDM 2015 and we were reassured by the expertise within CHAS that they would support organisations in getting them aligned.

For Norse, being CHAS Accredited ourselves is also one of our key business objectives. We were therefore delighted to achieve Group accreditation in February 2017 with 19 of our business units being covered under the certification. Going through the process enabled us to identify any weaknesses in our safety management system. It was a real team effort and was seen as an extremely worthwhile project for raising standards and helps ensure that health and safety remains a routine way of working within our operations.

CHAS is just another way that we are working with our contractors to improve health and safety awareness. The biggest drive behind this initiative is to make work places safer, not only for our employees but also for all those groups who interact with us.

We look forward to a continuing relationship with CHAS and utilising the wider scope of services that CHAS are offering as part of their re-brand.”
