CHAS Case Study

The University of Warwick

University of Warwick

The University of Warwick is globally connected, forward-looking and entrepreneurial. They create new ways of thinking and achieving: making them stand out from their competitors and the more ‘traditional universities’ and creating an inspiring place to study and undertake research.

Warwick is one of the UK’s great success stories. In less than fifty years since being founded they have become one of the UK’s best universities, consistently at the top of UK league tables and they are rapidly climbing the international league tables of world class universities.

They are a campus-based University with over 23,000 students and over 5,000 staff. They bring economic benefits to the surrounding regions, including Coventry and Warwickshire. An externally-commissioned study estimated that the University contributes around £520m a year to the regional economy, and supports 15,500 jobs across the West Midlands.

They also bring cultural and social benefits to the local area, with their Arts Centre attracting an estimated 750,000 people a year to around 1,500 different theatre, dance, music, comedy, and visual arts events.

Duncan Stiles, Health and Safety and Compliance Manager from University of Warwick said:

“The University of Warwick Estates Office has had access to CHAS since November 2007. We currently use the CHAS database as part of the Control of Contractors process that fully underpins the University’s Contractors Code of Conduct.

The benefit to us in having access to the CHAS scheme is the reassurance it gives us that contractors are demonstrating compliance with important parts of health and safety law. The CHAS system alerts contractors that essential health, safety and current insurance information should be in place at all times, meaning there’s no reason for a contractor to be out of date.”
