CHAS – the supply chain risk management expert – has supported UCL’s Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management (BSCPM) in the delivery of their Masters module ‘The Construction Firm’.
Students from the Construction Economics and Management MSc and Project and Enterprise Management MSc programmes took part in the module which deals with contractors and subcontractors, and the various compliance and ethical issues to which they are responding and which, in turn, influences their actions and relationships. Gareth Rondel, Sustainable Business Lead of CHAS, was joined in the virtual classroom by Julia Barrett, Chief Sustainability Officer for Willmott Dixon.
Compliance issues are legal requirements, such as the need to abide by health and safety legislation, building regulations or financial requirements. Ethical issues are a variety of items influenced by legislation such as the Modern Slavery or Social Value Acts, but where practice goes beyond legislation and is considered ‘the right thing to do’, rather than just meeting legal requirements.
The module explored how the capability of main contractors, and their supply chain partners, to be able to deliver on compliance and ethical issues is intrinsically linked to their success in winning and delivering projects on behalf of clients. The services that CHAS offers to its client and contractor customers enables an understanding of the capabilities of supply chain partners against known standards, such as PAS 91 or the Common Assessment Standard – both used widely throughout the construction industry.
CHAS simplifies the first steps in creating robust supply chain relationships, from where continuing collaboration can provide improvements in the delivery of projects to higher standards over time.
This module is led by BSCPM’s Professor of Construction Management, Jacqui Glass, who said: “I was keen to welcome CHAS to our module, to ensure that the prospective industry leaders on our course have an understanding of the importance of accreditation as a powerful tool – because it makes for better working relationships between construction firms, and that is a vital lesson for anyone entering this sector.”
Gareth Rondel commented: “Strong supply chain relationships are built around a good understanding of each other’s businesses. What we do at CHAS is help to provide a clear and easy way for clients and contractors to demonstrate their capabilities in managing and mitigating risks against well-recognised industry schemes including the Common Assessment Standard. By providing this service we enable relationships to begin more quickly, and allow clients and contractors to forge stronger and more open relationships based on transparent, accredited data.”
