CHAS Health And Safety Assessment Options

CHAS Standard members have three routes achieve health and safety compliance.

Full Desktop Assessment

As our standard health and safety assessment option, a full desktop assessment allows you to provide all relevant health and safety information about your business online.

We’ll ask you to complete a set of questions about your health and safety policies and procedures and evidence your answers with relevant documents.

CHAS Assured On-Site Audit

This type of assessment ensures the policies and procedures assessed during the desk top assessment are fully embedded into the company’s management system, by sampling live documents during an onsite audit (Assured can be completed On-site or Remotely).

This option is ideal for organisations with many employees and highly complex supply chains.

Deem To Satisfy Application

As a registered SSIP member, CHAS can help contractors who have met the requirements of an assessment through other SSIP member schemes to apply for CHAS Standard membership through the Deemed to Satisfy scheme. This step removes the need to undergo another health and safety assessment.

SSIP Compliance

SSIP

SSIP enables you to:

  • Demonstrate your health and safety compliance
  • Secure more work opportunities
  • Save time and money on your risk assessment process

SSIP is the fundamental compliance criteria for contractor health and safety assessment and is recognised by buyers across the entire construction industry.

SSIP-approved schemes such as CHAS are approved and recognised by the Health and Safety Executive. This means that buyers mandating SSIP can be confident that contractors meet the HSE core criteria.

CHAS is a founding member of the SSIP community, having been a part of its inception in May 2009. Our award-winning team of experts has completed over 450,000 assessments for UK contractors and will guide you through the process to achieve compliance with the SSIP standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

A health and safety risk assessment is a process that seeks to identify health and safety (H&S) hazards in your workplace that could potentially harm employees or members of the public.

There are two reasons companies need regular health and safety risk assessments.

  1. Health and safety risk assessments are essential tools that protect the health and safety of workers, visitors and the community.
  2. You have a legal duty to identify and assess the H&S risks that could harm your workers and people visiting your facilities and work sites.

CHAS Standard is our entry-level assessment and membership package designed to help contractors complete a health and safety assessment and demonstrate compliance with the SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) Standard. As a co-founder of the SSIP scheme, CHAS offers the convenience of helping you meet the requirements of other SSIP schemes through your CHAS assessment.

The law requires all employers to conduct a health and safety risk assessment on all work performed by employees. Companies with five or more employees are legally obligated to record the findings of their risk assessments in a health and safety policy.

Yes. All employers have a legal duty to assess the health and safety (H&S) risks in their place of work. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to:

  • Identify hazards that could cause injury or illness in the workplace
  • Determine the likelihood of these hazards causing harm to workers and visitors
  • Take action to eliminate or control these risks

Conducting a health and safety risk assessment is just one aspect of fulfilling these requirements.

A health and safety risk assessment can be a powerful tool for helping you determine the type and scope of workplace health and safety (H&S) training your workforce needs. Workplace health and safety training can help fill in the gaps identified in your risk assessments, ensuring that your people know how to be safe at work.

Workplace health and safety training can cover:

  • Manual handling (i.e. carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling) of objects
  • Working at height
  • Working in noisy environments
  • Managing equipment vibration to reduce injury
  • Managing skin hazards (e.g. chemicals, hot hazards)
  • Managing biological hazards
  • Fire safety
  • Asbestos safety
  • Protection against dust, paints, and coatings

Whether you’re a client or a contractor, CHAS can help you meet your health and safety (H&S) requirements in your workplace or supply chain with our award-winning health and safety assessments.

If you’re a CHAS client, you can use our FREE online VeriforceOne Client Portal to source contractors and suppliers who have demonstrated compliance with health and safety regulations.

Meanwhile, contractors can demonstrate their health and safety compliance by becoming CHAS Standard members.

Organisations can demonstrate their health and safety (H&S) competence by meeting the requirements of the CHAS health and safety assessment. This option allows you to meet prequalification standards when supplying goods and services to a main contractor or project.

At CHAS, we can help you demonstrate compliance with health and safety requirements through a full desktop assessment, a CHAS assured on-site audit and a Deemed to Satisfy application under the SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) member scheme.
