What is SSIP?

Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) isn’t an assessment in itself. It’s an umbrella organisation that pulls together several different health and safety schemes, combining them to create a single assessment process.

How does SSIP certification work?

You don’t apply directly to SSIP. Instead, SSIP sets out an assessment standard and organisations like CHAS provide a certification programme that meets those criteria.

As a contractor, you can obtain SSIP certification by completing your assessment with a SSIP forum member like CHAS.

What is Deem to Satisfy?

One of the key benefits of SSIP membership is Deem to Satisfy (DtS).

Deem to Satisfy is a mutual recognition process between SSIP member schemes. If you already hold a valid certificate with one SSIP member, you may not need to complete another full health and safety assessment when applying to another member scheme.

Instead, your existing assessment can be recognised, helping you avoid repeating the same process and reducing administration.

How does Deem to Satisfy work?

If you already hold a valid SSIP certificate with another member scheme and require CHAS certification, you may be eligible to apply through the Deem to Satisfy process.

The process is simple:

Provide details of your current SSIP certification.
CHAS verifies your existing approval.
We review any additional information required, where applicable.
Once complete, you’ll receive your CHAS certification without undergoing a full assessment again.

How to get your SSIP certification with CHAS

Joining our network of over 32,500 of SSIP certified contractors is easy.

Step 1: Tell us about your business

We’ll ask you for some information, including:

Your business name and address
Your primary representative’s contact information
Your email address and phone number

Step 2: Choose your membership package and begin your assessments

We’ll ask you to complete two modules:

Health and safety assessment
Insurance (verification)

Step 3: An assessor will review your application

A CHAS assessor will review the information within 48 hours*.

What is SSIP?
