How to Join CHAS

4 Simple steps to becoming a member

Become a CHAS member and make the most of exclusive membership benefits. Gain access to easy-to-use accreditation schemes, online training, and discounts and prequalify for work opportunities with leading organisations.

Joining CHAS will help you meet excellent health and safety standards, safeguard your business against risk and comply with important legislation. And becoming a member couldn’t be easier. Our mission is to simplify health and safety and risk management and make it easy to achieve compliance — so we’ve made it as easy as possible to become a fully certified CHAS member.

Here’s how to join CHAS in four simple steps.

Step 1Tell Us about Your Company

The first step towards becoming a CHAS member is filling out your company details. If you have your company registration number, our online form can use this to automatically fill in your relevant company details.

This section doesn’t take long — a few minutes if that. We need to know the name and address of your company; a contact name, email address, and phone number and how many employees your company has.

During this stage, you’ll also need to set up a password to access the CHAS contractor portal.

Step 2Choose Your Membership Package

We offer several different membership packages for contractors. All membership types will include standard membership benefits such as access to our jobs board and discounted resources. Larger packages include access to a wider range of certification modules.

The membership package you choose will determine the projects you can prequalify for, and the areas of risk management you can demonstrate compliance in.

Step 3Complete and Submit Your Application

This is the most important stage of the application process. You’ll need to upload paperwork demonstrating your company’s compliance with our easy-to-use contractor portal. The paperwork you need to provide will include documents regarding your current health and safety procedures and risk assessments, as well as evidence of industry-related training.

Here are some examples of supporting evidence you may need to submit:

  • Your health and safety policies
  • Evidence of risk assessments and method statements
  • Insurance documents
  • Records of maintenance and testing of equipment (such as PAT)
  • Records of on-site health and safety inductions
  • Proof of training and certification
  • Evidence of health surveillance
  • Construction Phase Plans

The exact information you need to provide will depend on the membership package you choose. For example, if you opted for our most basic package, you’ll only need to provide evidence of compliance with health and safety regulations. However, for our more comprehensive membership packages, we will need to assess supporting documents covering up to 12 areas of risk management. You can find details of which documents you need to provide on the contractor portal.

Once you’ve uploaded your supporting documentation, you can easily submit your application with the click of a button.

Step 4An Assessor Will Review Your Application

Within 10 working days of submitting your application, one of our fully qualified assessors will review the information you provided to make sure your company is compliant with legislation. This assessment can occur electronically — we don’t have to carry out site visits to award accreditation unless you’ve specifically requested an on-site inspection.

Your assessor will let you know as soon as possible whether or not your application was successful. If they’re happy your documents prove your compliance, you’ll achieve CHAS accreditation, and will instantly receive your electronic certificate, a hard-copy certificate and a collection of vehicle stickers. You’ll gain access to our jobs board, and you may prequalify for projects listed by CHAS clients.

If you don’t pass the assessment, don’t panic. Our assessors will let you know where you went wrong and can offer advice on how to successfully reapply.
